Marion Street Park Association Block Party！

In spite of bad weather forecast, we had a very nice day at Marion Street Park Association Block Party.

We were very pleased to set our accommodations inside the beautiful Marion Street Park. 

 Our guest artists, a Capoeira group, Ile De Palmares, held a demonstration and a workshop there.

Their music and performance attracted people.

Some girl wanted to learn capoeira right away.

They held instruction workshop to kids individually at glorious lawn space of the park too.

Some kids were very enthusiastic for learning capoeira techniques. 

Our collaborator, Yuki of Home Cooking of the World, cooked Curry Noodle Soup.

She explained to people about why it is important for her project, and ingredients of the soup of the day during her cooking.

We set a new parasol for a play yard and priority seats area.

We set a new small private place for potty training.

A new setting with an electric pumping tool, and a fan.

About Ile De Palmares:

Capoeira (cap·o·ei·ra) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art disguised as a dance. It was created in the 16th century by enslaved Africans in Brazil who used it to liberate themselves. We hold classes almost every day of the week at a variety of locations throughout New York City, for both adults and children. Beginners and advanced students are welcomed. Classes are held in Long Island City, Queens; Williamsburg, Brooklyn; Lower East Side, Manhattan; and Flushing, Queens.

We are a community of like-minded individuals who support each other and strive towards understanding our true potential. Together, we are committed to a lifetime journey of mental, physical and spiritual growth.

Ready for an experience of your life? Our classes are an hour and a half which consist of a warmup, stretching, basic Capoeira movements, music and games. Arrive to class with comfortable clothing, a bottle of water and a smile.

Artists for an Artist's Tent.

1 Stop Family Pop Up @Mini Market!

People enjoyed a beautiful autumn day at Socrates Park. 

 We set two tents. Left is the artist’s tent and right is the lactation tent. A play yard, diaper changing table, nuts free table, priority seats, and stroller parking were aside.

There were also diapers, changing sheets, wipes, some clothes, dirty bags, and sanitizer gels on the diaper-changing table. Those supplies are the things parents need to carry when they go out with a baby. This makes it difficult to parents to visit events especially outdoors. We want to make change on it.

The guest artist Gina invited people to join her WS. Not only kids but also many adults enjoyed process of making bags with beautiful color gel. 

There was a play yard, so parents keep their toddler safe and then could participate in the art WS or, take some extra materials and enjoy cratering your art works at a home!

1 Stop Family Pop Up @ Lower West Side!

Hi! We enjoyed a beautiful Saturday at the Chelsea Block Party put on by Infirnity

on 26^thstreet, between 9 and 10^thAvenue. Thank you, Lisa!

Left is guest artist Yoko’s tent. Right is a lactation space and diaper changing table. A play yard is located between the tents.

Inside the lactation tent, there are chairs, stools, hand pumps, pumping bags, breast pads, a nursing Boppy pillow, ice and a cooler bag to store pumped milk, nipple cream, a nursing cover, and more! Women can feel welcome to nurse or pump in this private, sanitary, (quieter) location.

On the other side of the lactation space, there is a diaper changing table stocked with supplies (and clothes in case of accidents), as well as a potette for older children who are potty training.

This is our guest artist, Yoko! The man behind Yoko is her son, Daigo. In the workshop Yoko proposed and led, participants created reusable wraps made with cotton cloth and beeswax. These wraps are used as an eco-friendly alternative to zip lock bags, plastic wrap, or tinfoil to preserve and store food.

Participants picked a favorite cloth pattern.  Yoko then dipped it in melted beeswax.

After the wax cooled, participants shaved the wax to flatten the wraps. 

Daigo supported his mother, Yoko, explaining how participants could recreate the process at home.

Rica recruited passersbys to Yoko’s workshop, explaining what she was doing, how, and why.

Many families utilized the diaper-changing table, including moms, grandmothers, and fathers.

Another mom was changing a diaper outside; the two are kept separate for sanitary and privacy reasons, as we have men change diapers as well. A volunteer high school student was sitting outside to  monitor the tent and answer questions.

Make Your Own Reusable Beeswax Wrap

Yoko Fukuda was born in Japan. She is a mother artist whose life was inspired and improved by art. She lives with her husband, son and daughter in NY since 1995. Her project promotes using sustainable items for daily life, such as this eco-friendly beeswax wrap.

Join the community event this weekend in LWS!

We are very excited to announce that our One Stop Family Pop Up will appear this weekend at a community event hosted by Infirnity:

Infirnity Community Block Party

July 14th, 12-6pm  Rain or Shine 

26th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues 

The event will have food, music, inflatables, games, arts/crafts etc.

We would love to introduce our first guest mother artist, Yoko.

She will present a "Make Your Own Reusable Beeswax Wrap" workshop.

Living with sustainable material

Reusable beeswax wraps provide an eco-friendly alternative to plastic wrap.

Making beeswax fabric wrap at home is a rewarding project, and a great way to use up scraps of old cotton fabric.

We can use recycled baby dress shirts and crib bed sheets to give them new life.

The wraps adhere to a cup, a bowl or can be used to wrap up a sandwich and left over food.

You can use a baby dress, shirts, etc. that represent your special memories. If you don't want to throw them away, this is a great way to give them new life!

1 Stop Family Pop Up @ Ditmars Park!

We had beautiful weather and a great turnout of over 200 people for our event.
Many thanks to Friends of Ditmars Park for having us!

We offered a lactation space, diaper changing station and potette, stroller parking, play area, priority rest area, and interactive art related to pregnancy/families!


Moms enjoyed our private space and quiet time inside the lactation tent.

Open Call: Artists for an Artst's Tent!

we are pleased to announce this Open Call!
Artists for an Artist's Tent.

We are the One Stop Family Pop Up! Our aim is to help families access and enjoy outdoor events while raising children by providing two tents in public spaces: 1). An artist’s tent that invites community members to engage in interactive art workshops related to family, and 2). A lactation tent + a diaper changing station + priority rest & play area + an information table – accommodations that all families need but are not yet provided in our community. Our awareness initiatives celebrate maternal health and serve to improve access for pregnant women and parents.

Your proposal should have:

・Your name

・Your website/SNS account name

・An explanation of your interactive art workshop idea(s) in a one-two page proposal. Please describe your:

A: Workshop or interactive public art.

B: Art show

You may hold either A (workshop or interactive public art), B (an art show), or both A and B.

Tent dimensions are 10 x 10 feet. You will be supplied with a table, chairs and tarp wall if needed.

Proposals are due: May 31 at 11:59pm, 2018. Please email your proposals to 1stopfamilypopup@gmail.com.

One Stop Family Pop Ups will be held four times from about 1:00-4:00PM on Saturdays or Sundays during June – September, rain or shine. Planned locations include Astoria Park and Socrates Park, in Queens; a street festival in LES of Manhattan; and Boogie On The Boulevard, in the Bronx. As specific dates are still TBA, we will match you to an available date and location.

Each participating artist will be awarded $125 for their participation and $100 for material costs for a total of $225. Selected artists are able to access and shop for free materials at The Materials For The Arts during June-September. Each artist is responsible for the design and implementation of their agreed-upon project.

One Stop Family Pop Up

One Stop Family Pop Up for 2018

This image depicts our expanded plan for the One Stop Family Pop Up in 2018.  
We are planning to host the project at family-events in NYC Parks and public spaces.
The exhibit will have two walled tents, 10x10 feet each. 

A guest artist will be stationed at one tent. There, the parent artist will hold an art show and workshop that relates to family living.

The other tent will be a private lactation tent near a diaper changing station. There will be a priority seating area as well. 
People can use diapers, wipes,  hand sanitizer, manual breast pumps,  lactation pads, etc. as needed.

These are accommodations that all families need but are still not publicly provided in our community. When made available, they enable people to stay and enjoy events for a much longer period of time rather than rushing home to breastfeed, pump, or change a diaper. Our awareness initiatives celebrate maternal health and serve to improve access for pregnant women and parents.




We will also hold workshops so that people can make a lasting commitment to being family-friendly. For example, at a pin making workshop, participants may create slogans like, “Pregnant? Take my seat” or "I support breastfeeding" to wear on their shirts, hats, or bags to display their support in public on an ongoing basis.

We will give small business owners in the community our “Breastfeeding Welcome Here” and “Priority Seating” signs to put on their doors or in their windows.

DeborahWasserman held an interactive salad-making workshop entitled, “Your Body is a Temple”. Passerbys gazed at beautiful, natural, and clean greens at the table. The artists led people in making salads with fresh ingredients and sharing them with each other.

YasuyoTanaka held a “Health Karuta(Cards)” workshop and introduced safe, natural plant colors onto paper, along with felt pens and crayons.
Participants drew a health catchword and its image on cards. A WS like this one helps us to share ideas about our health while playing together.
