1 Stop Family Pop Up @Boogie On The Boulevard!

Boogie On The Boulevard is one of the greatest street events in The Bronx!

There were 5,000 visitors during 2-6pm of the event.

We set three tents among other tents related to health, food and sports. Thanks Rachel!

1. Lactation tent

2. Diaper changing table, Play Yard, Nuts Free table, and Priority seats

3. Healthy Food WS and demonstration tent by Yuki Nagata

Beside the three tents, we also had an art installation by Hiromi Niizeki

This was Yuki’s explanation display about Japanese ingredients for easy and healthy cooking. There were handouts of recipe for cooking at home. 

Yuki showed, explained about garlic soy sauce and gave away sample food that she cooked at site for visitors to taste. There was a WS table people tried to make their own to bring home. Peeling skin of garlic was fun. “Look! I made this! Here is also a tasty sample.”

 This was Hiromi’s POKETTO, an interactive art installation. Many passersby participated in the art project.

She was interviewed to Bronx’s show!

Many visitors used our diaper-changing table. During a toddler was playing inside the Play Area, guardians could participate in our art activities and other events.

You see a shadow of mom who was breast-feeding inside the tent. We were very proud that we could provide private space for many moms.

　

These were Nuts Free table for kids.

Some guardians took a break with our priority seats.

“Absolutely Quick, Easy, and Delicious Japanese Cooking at Home!,” Food workshop and demonstration.

Making their own Japanese food ingredients by peeling cloves of garlics and soaking them in soy sauce. Demonstration of how to cook easy and delicious everyday Japanese food at home, using the same garlic infused soy sauce.

By cooking at home regularly, a family can afford healthier and more nutritious meals, and stretch the limited budget. My dream is to have a food van, which can prepare and offer many different cultures’ home style food at different places, particularly at economically disadvantaged area for free. By tasting unfamiliar food, we can physically experience different cultures (regardless within or outside the U.S.). 

America is getting more segregated by income, culture, religion, and race. The upward mobility in the United States is in decline. When this social system is pulling the citizens further apart and pitting the disenfranchised against each other in order to maintain the wealth of fortunate few, the rest of us have to band together and arm each other with knowledge to survive and prosper in the future. 

When many people can’t (or don’t) cross over to see “the other side”, the food van can bring “the other side” to them in order to satisfy the hunger of body and mind.

Hiromi asks people to stop for a short time and think about what is important to them and why. Participants may respond to the question by drawing, writing and/or creating small pieces of art work to leave in the pockets. 

Both workshops will be flanked by our One Stop accommodations: A private and hygenic lactation space, a diaper changing and potette area, stroller parking, and a play space. We also provide smaller chairs for children to participate in workshops.

Niizeki Hiromi: Niizeki has exhibited her work both domestically and internationally at many prominent art institutions which include The National Museum of Art in Johannesburg, South Africa; Palo Alto Junior Museum, Palo Alto, CA; Memorial Art Gallery, The University of Rochester, Rochester, NY; Highways Performance and Arts, Los Angeles, CA; Cave, Brooklyn, NY; and La Foret Museum, Tokyo, Japan. Her mixed media installations, sculptural objects, and assemblages embody her interest in exploring the use of various types of existing and handmade papers. Her work is widely known and exists among a number of high profile collections. She has received critical acclaim by art critics such as Holland Cotter of The New York Times, Stuart Ferguson of the Wall Street Journal, and Jane Ingram Allen for Sculpture Magazine. She has participated in a number of Arts Residencies which include Clock Tower Gallery/PS1 Contemporary Art Center, N.Y. and Governors Island Studio Program at the Children's Museum of the Arts, New York. Shopping at Materials For The Arts

Alongside our accommodations, we also host a workshop for families at each event.  We are excited to announce that we have now selected our guest artists from our open call!

We arranged a trip to the Materials For The Arts  for three of our guest artists last week.

The materials they picked up will be used in their One Stop Family Pop Up workshops, free to the public.

 

We were very excited to receive these supplies at no cost!

Gina Verdi, One Stop Family Pop Up guest artist: "I was focusing on flexible, shiny, and transparent items. I also got practical items: a box, some clothesline, some big envelopes with clear windows, etc for setup/directions."

"Here are the phone cases I got at MFTA. They are flexible plastic. My plan is to have people cut off the edges of the cases to make a flat piece and use them in the sensory gel bags. "
