Boogie event was blast!

Boogie On The Boulevard was always blast event!

Our three tents: lactation & diaper changing station, and two parent artists tents were set in food related block.

The Boogie event was filled with many family participants.

We were proud of providing a private lactation space, a diaper changing table, a set of priority area, a play yard, and nuts-free table. We also used multiple languages for these services in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Bengali.

We made a special flyer of a list of app resources that are convenient for all families: Restroom locator, Diaper changing space locater, Breast feeding/Pumping space for moms locater, Community spaces open to public lists, MTA service changing schedule map, MTA elevator service lists,
Maternity/Family leave resources, and Resources of returning to work. There were QR codes of these all resources on the flyer, so everybody can find and reach the source in glance.
The woman wore our pregnant belly sculpture then tried to take off shoes and put on sitting on a chair. It was not easy!

Passersby were very curious about Making Beeswax Wrap WS. Many people didn’t know about this alternative idea instead of using general plastic wrap. We felt many people wanted to reduce plastic wrap, but they just didn’t know how to do it.

A parent artist Yoko explained why she started to do this WS, how it works, and how to make by yourself. Around 65 visitors participated in the Ws and learned how it worked. Yoko has started to reduce plastic products these years, and ended up holding the Making Beeswax Wrap WS for spreading the eco-friendly idea in a practical way.

A student volunteer helped a participant how to use the wrap in using Origami folding technique.

Yoko put a cloth into a hot pot of melting beeswax.

Participants got some organic snack in their hand made container made by Beeswax wrap.

Passersby gathered to Making Onigiri Rice ball WS.

Another parent artist Yuki prepared six kinds ofingredients to put inside the rice ball.

Yuki’s concept is we can learn each other’s culture through learning home cooking. Home cooking is different from plates of restaurants. Yuki introduced how to make a rice ball that you cannot usually see on a menu in NYC Japanese restaurant, but is also soul food of Japanese people.

Yuki and volunteer students put some rice on a bio-plastic wrap on participant’s palm. The participant selected any ingredients they like to put in rice ball.

She was making rice a ball shape using her hands.
Enjoy the rice ball!

Making Onigiri rice ball workshop by Home Cooking of the World
The eyes of your mind open when experiencing the joy of making your own food and tasting unknown flavor from different cultures.
You can make a rice ball with a choice of ingredients!! I am preparing several different ingredients, including sweet and salty tuna, salty salmon flakes, Spam!, corn mayo!

Making Beeswax Wrap workshop by Yoko Yoko
Living with sustainable material -
Reusable beeswax wraps provide an eco-friendly alternative to plastic wrap.
Making beeswax fabric wrap is a rewarding project; not only is it a great way to use up scraps of old cotton fabric but also a way to end plastic pollution.
We can use recycled baby dress shirts and crib bed sheets to give them new life and preserve their memories. Wraps adhere to a cup, a bowl or can be used to wrap up a sandwich and left over food!

Our project is supportd by Citizens Comittee for NYC, Bronx Health Reach, UP-Stand, and New York Foundation for the Arts. We appprictae a volunteer group from Japan Culture Club of Bronx High School of Science.

1 Stop Family Pop Up @Boogie On The Boulevard!

Boogie On The Boulevard is one of the greatest street events in The Bronx!

There were 5,000 visitors during 2-6pm of the event.

We set three tents among other tents related to health, food and sports. Thanks Rachel!

1. Lactation tent

2. Diaper changing table, Play Yard, Nuts Free table, and Priority seats
3. Healthy Food WS and demonstration tent by Yuki Nagata
Beside the three tents, we also had an art installation by Hiromi Niizeki

This was Yuki’s explanation display about Japanese ingredients for easy and healthy cooking. There were handouts of recipe for cooking at home.

Yuki showed, explained about garlic soy sauce and gave away sample food that she cooked at site for visitors to taste. There was a WS table people tried to make their own to bring home. Peeling skin of garlic was fun. “Look! I made this! Here is also a tasty sample.”

This was Hiromi’s POKETTO, an interactive art installation. Many passersby participated in the art project.

She was interviewed to Bronx’s show!

Many visitors used our diaper-changing table. During a toddler was playing inside the Play Area, guardians could participate in our art activities and other events.

You see a shadow of mom who was breast-feeding inside the tent. We were very proud that we could provide private space for many moms.

These were Nuts Free table for kids.

Some guardians took a break with our priority seats.

Absolutely Quick, Easy, and Delicious Japanese Cooking at Home!,” Food workshop and demonstration.
Making their own Japanese food ingredients by peeling cloves of garlics and soaking them in soy sauce. Demonstration of how to cook easy and delicious everyday Japanese food at home, using the same garlic infused soy sauce.
Guest artist, Yukiyo Nagata, japanese-kitchen.net

By cooking at home regularly, a family can afford healthier and more nutritious meals, and stretch the limited budget. My dream is to have a food van, which can prepare and offer many different cultures’ home style food at different places, particularly at economically disadvantaged area for free. By tasting unfamiliar food, we can physically experience different cultures (regardless within or outside the U.S.).
America is getting more segregated by income, culture, religion, and race. The upward mobility in the United States is in decline. When this social system is pulling the citizens further apart and pitting the disenfranchised against each other in order to maintain the wealth of fortunate few, the rest of us have to band together and arm each other with knowledge to survive and prosper in the future.
When many people can’t (or don’t) cross over to see “the other side”, the food van can bring “the other side” to them in order to satisfy the hunger of body and mind.

POKETTO”, participatory public art installation - "If you could find anything you wished in a pocket what would it be? Write it. Draw it. Leave It in a pocket. Read what others said.”
BringPOCKETS from your precious old clothes! They could be added on the installation.
Guest artist, Hiromi Niizeki www.niizekihiromi.com

Hiromi asks people to stop for a short time and think about what is important to them and why. Participants may respond to the question by drawing, writing and/or creating small pieces of art work to leave in the pockets.

Both workshops will be flanked by our One Stop accommodations: A private and hygenic lactation space, a diaper changing and potette area, stroller parking, and a play space. We also provide smaller chairs for children to participate in workshops.

BOOGIE at Boogie On The Boulevard !

The Second Art Show and Workshops at Boogie On The Boulevard's outdoor event, The Bronx
August 20th, 2017, 12-4pm

We set up a tent for our information table and pin making workshop. We displayed two big signs that explained our project/history and how to participate in the project.

With the Peek-a-boo, we explained how the world changed when we were pregnant, and asked participants to see the world as a pregnant woman to gain empathy.

Many young men and women, and even elderly men, tried the belly sculpture that weighed 20-lbs; the water bottles inside the sculpture simulated the average belly of a pregnant woman.

Make Your Own Pin Workshop, 2 ¼” button.
After trying the interactive sculpture, participants wrote their commitment to support pregnant women and new parents in their own languages, and then created their own pins on-site.

At the pilot event we held, 50 people participated in the pin making workshop in four hours. Participants took their pins with them to display on their bags or person while in public to show their ongoing support for pregnant women and families.
